Lecturer in Interaction Design
The position will be filled as soon as possible or according to agreement for a fixed term or permanently on any level of the Aalto University Lecturer Career System.
Design of interactive embedded systemradios, online services, interactive materials and wearable electronics has become a key interest in many branches of design including product, service, textile and fashion design as well as in experimental design projects. All these are in the focus of Department of Design education.
The lecturer’s teaching contributes to Department of Design MA programs Collaborative and Industrial Design, Fashion, Clothing and Textile Design and Department of Design BA majors Design and the new English speaking BA program planned to start in 2019. The lecturer will collaborate with the Department of Design research teams Embodied Design Group and Fashion/Textile Futures. The lecturer will utilize Aalto University facilities and develop collaboration with other schools of Aalto University.
The lecturer´s duties include teaching computational thinking and interactive prototyping to bachelor and master level students, coordinating projects and participating in the development of teaching, research and artistic activities at the Department of Design. The lecturer will participate in the guidance and assessment of student assignments and thesis works and take part in student selections when needed.
Design of interactive products, interfaces and systems requires advanced skills in interactive software and hardware prototyping. In addition, a successful work of the lecturer requires knowledge of human centered design, creative design thinking and good collaboration skills.
The lecturer is required to have at least a higher university degree, i.e. master level, and artistic-professional competence, practical experience of working in the field of the lectureship and good teaching skills. Research and technical merits, as well as other significant merits in the field of lectureship and pedagogic education are regarded an advantage. The lecturer shall have knowledge of the international field of interaction design and good communication skills in English. Finnish and Swedish language skills are regarded an advantage.
Successful conduct of the duties requires strong know-how of the processes and practices of interaction design. Diverse experience in design and knowledge of existing and emerging technologies, project management and teamwork skills are essential for the position. Skills in electronics and/or industry experience Lecturer in Interaction Design are regarded an advantage.
The applicant is also required to have a vision for the future of the field of the lectureship and ability to work in a flexible and open-minded fashion in the multi-disciplinary fields of design.
Salary and working time
Salary will be determined upon competence and experience of the applicant following the salary system of Finnish universities. Teaching personnel belong to the total working hours system, working 1624 hours annually. The contract includes occupational health benefits and Finland´s comprehensive social security.
