University Teacher in Contemporary Design
The position is a parental leave substitute and it will be filled for fixed term from October 2018 to June 2019.
Your role and goals
The teaching and research field of the lectureship is experimental and groundbreaking. The field encompasses product design and studio production, from mass market products to one-of-a-kind artifacts. Teaching will provide students with tools to carry out esthetically, functionally and culturally ambitious design projects of highest quality, and the skills for successful implementation of ideas and designs. In addition to professional design capabilities, entrepreneurship skills will be emphasized in the teaching.
The university teacher’s duties consist mainly of teaching contemporary design in Design major at BA level and in a new Contemporary Design MA programme, coordinating and leading design projects and participating in the development of education, research and artistic activities at the Department of Design. The lecturer will guide and assess student assignments and thesis works and take part in the student selections when needed.
Your experience and ambitions
The job requires good knowledge of the industrial design, contemporary design and applied arts fields encompassing material properties, different production methods as well as a strong vision to combine the rich traditions of the field with future innovations. Project coordination and co-operation skills are essential, as the lecturer is expected to operate flexibly and open-mindedly in the ever-evolving multi-disciplinary field of design.
The lecturer is required to have at least a higher university degree, i.e. master level, and suitable artistic-professional competency, practical work experience in contemporary design and good teaching skills. Research and other merits relevant to the field of the lectureship as well as pedagogic training are regarded an advantage. Fluent communication skill in English is essential, Finnish and Swedish language skills are an advantage. Being acquainted with the international field of contemporary design is recommendable.
Salary and working time
Salary will be determined upon competence and experience of the chosen person following the salary system of Finnish universities. Teaching personnel belong to the total working hours system, working 1624 hours annually.
