The School of Arts, Design and Architecture (ARTS) is an institution of higher education for design, media, architecture, motion picture, art education and art. The current key areas of research are design, digital media, audiovisual representation, art, visual culture, welfare architecture and emerging technologies as well as urban planning and design. The school produces specialists and innovators of art, design and architecture with strong artistic and technical skills.

Department of Design (http://design.aalto.fi/en/) is an academic community of approximately 850 students, 70 doctoral students and 70 faculty members. The department conducts research and provides education in bachelor, master and doctoral programmes across a broad range of subjects and themes.

 

Aalto is a multidisciplinary university having a strong commitment to renewing the society by arts, creativity and design. Aalto is in the process of creating a broad design competence offering for all its students to expand their perspectives and skillsets. Aalto is also developing solutions to strengthen its engineering and business cultures with creative practices throughout its organization. In addition, Aalto is deepening the dialogue with its partners to increase their comprehension and utilization of design. To coordinate and facilitate these activities

 

Aalto University is recruiting a Designer in Residence for a period of three years.

 

The starting date is April 1, 2018, or appropriate.

 

The tasks of the Designer in Residence include (1) facilitating the launch of Aalto wide educational design offering, (2) strengthening design thinking within university leadership and services, (3) supporting executive design education, and (4) integrating design in Aalto’s partnering practices.

The Designer in Residence will be positioned at the Department of Design and s/he will collaborate closely with University Wide Art Studies and Artistic Activity Steering Group and a broad range of engineering and business programs.

A competitive candidate for the position has

  • Master or doctoral degree in design or closely related field
  • Practical expertise in the field of design and/or design management
  • Drive and experience to champion design in non-design contexts
  • Strong merits in at least one of the following: design education, design strategy, executive education and/or partnering networks and strategies.
  • Good communication skills in English. Finnish and Swedish skills are merits.

Salary

Aalto University follows the salary system of Finnish universities, but applicants may also provide salary requirements.
