Ornamo Art and Design Sale – art buying made easy

Ornamo’s annual Art and Design Sale in March will bring together a wide selection of Finnish works, including small-scale sculptures, jewellery and ceramic, metal, glass and textile art along with a series of unique pieces. Making a purchase at the event could not be easier or more straightforward; the event is run as a so-called take away exhibition, meaning that you can bring your purchases home with you on the day. The exhibition’s patron is Mr. Kari-Paavo Kokki.

The Ornamo event forms part of wider efforts to promote the sales of Finnish art and limited edition items. According to the results of a market survey carried out by Ornamo, people are increasingly interested in Finnish design but products need to be more accessible and widely available. Ornamo found that 90% of Finns are interested in purchasing arts and crafts. However, nearly 30% reported that they struggle to find places to buy such products.

“What the findings tell us is that people who are considering buying art tend to find art galleries somewhat intimidating. The Ornamo Art and Design Sale, however, is perceived as a much more approachable alternative,” explains Petra Ilonen, Project Manager at Ornamo.

“We also need to be able to offer people the option to buy art online. The potential offered by the online retail environment is something that has not been fully exploited in Finland so far when it comes to art and design.”

The 2016 Ornamo economic survey shows that just a third of art and design industry businesses in Finland make use of online stores and other digital channels to promote their services.

Alongside the Art and Design Sale, Ornamo is responding to the challenge with the recent re-launch of the Finnishdesigners.fi search portal. Finnishdesigners.fi brings together Finnish artists and designers on a shared platform, providing direct access to artists’ own online shops, which consumers according to the Ornamo consumer survey are struggling to find.

Kaapelitehdas to host bumper offering of Finnish art

Coinciding with the Ornamo Art and Design Sale at Helsinki’s Kaapelitehdas is the Sales Event organised by the Finnish Painters’ Union. The annual event brings together more than 1,500 artworks created by almost 600 members of the union. Artworks purchased at the event can also be collected on the day. The event aims to discover new audiences for Finnish art and to make art more accessible to the public. For more information, please visit: https://www.painters.fi/en/sales-event/.
