Unique design and different techniques – Ornamo Art and Design Sale at Cable Factory 9–17 March 2019

A sales exhibition of unique Finnish art and design, running from 9 to 17 March 2019. The Ornamo Art and Design Sale is the perfect place to purchase art for your home, your office or a public space.

The annual Ornamo Art and Design Sale brings hundreds of works showcasing different art techniques to Puristamo at Helsinki Cable Factory. These include unique, never-before-seen utensils as well as sculptures, lamps, jewellery and art made from ceramics, glass, textiles, wood and other materials. The exhibition features art from established artists and designers as well as newcomers. See the list of the artists at the end of the press release.

Buying art at the Art and Design Sale is easy and effortless, as buyers get to take their purchases home immediately. The sales exhibition features works by about a hundred artists and designers, including ceramic artists Catharina Kajander and Miia Kallio, glass artist Ritva-Liisa Pohjalainen, textile artist Suvi Suikki and designer Teemu Järvi. You will be able to spot plenty of newcomers alongside familiar names. A complete list of participants will be published in February.

In addition to attracting the public, the Ornamo Art and Design Sale has also established itself as a venue for collectors, many of whom are scouting new talents. Some of the works for sale end up in esteemed art collections, such as the Finnish State Art Collection.

This year, social commentary is a theme in many of the works on display. Ceramic artist Miia Kallio is especially interested in the hidden social power structures. Her works displayed in the exhibition deal with security and freedom of speech. “Even a free society has its own hidden mazes. We are regulated by many things, and we also censor ourselves”, says Kallio.

Textile artist Suvi Suikki draws attention to the elderly, who are cut off from society in many ways. She wishes to highlight their need to be valued and heard. The central themes of Minna Tuohisto-Kokko’s works are letting go and healing. The subjects revolve around searching for a peace of mind in nature – letting the ocean wash away your sorrows, the purifying power of nature and the environment. Designer Jouko Kärkkäinen’s wood sculptures champion for a more ecological future. The works at display include, for example, Wooden Planet is My Dream.
