The dark-toned Lemminkäinen’s Mother coat is a unique garment by Marjut Uotila. It lives through its wearers, gathers stories, and increases in value through use and shared experience.

What do fashion, clothing, and Finnish identity mean today?

The Mother of Lemminkäinen coat is a unique garment by fashion designer Marjut Uotila. Hand-embroidered with plant-dyed Finnish sheep wool on black linen, the dark-toned piece is part of her series of narrative, one-of-a-kind garments. Known as the founder of the menswear brand Dusty, Uotila explores the emotional value of clothing, community-building among users, and alternative ways of consuming fashion.

The coat is on view at Kunsthalle Helsinki in the Our Land, for All exhibition, curated by Annamari Vänskä, until May 17. After the exhibition, the coat will be available for anyone to rent and wear!

These type of fashion artworks, designed for shared use, capture their users’ experiences of wearing the garment in the form of stories. The idea is that the value of the garment increases as more user stories are added.

The Mother of Lemminkäinen coat has been created with the support of the new Iittala grant from the Ornamo Foundation.
