New strategy strengthens the vitality of the design community and the expertise of designers
Ornamo’s updated strategy invites all our members to a common journey. In the new Board term 2025-2030, responsibility and the impact of design will receive a stronger emphasis alongside a multi-voiced community.
Ornamo’s updated strategy was created to safeguard Ornamo’s vitality and ensure the competitiveness of designers. In the new period, responsibility and impact will receive a stronger emphasis alongside a multi-voiced community.

Design superpower in action
According to Ornamo’s Katja Soini, the second-term Chair of Ornamo’s board, the new update was necessary in a world that is now changing rapidly. Ornamo is one of the world’s largest design organizations, but also a small player in society.
– Design’s superpower is the ability to operate in uncertainty, and it is needed right now, when the labor market, operational requirements and geopolitical situation are seeking new forms. The updated strategy provides a clear plan for how we as a community can navigate this change and be an innovative force for change in the sustainability transition, says Soini.
In the strategy, we aim to answer two questions: How does Ornamo remain vibrant? How do designers remain competitive in the job market?
According to Soini, the strategy helps to focus Ornamo’s resources and strengthen cooperation, providing a support and learning community for designers interested in responsibility work.
– The strategy contains many practical activities that strengthen our community, help develop expertise and have a social impact, says Soini and calls on all members to make the vision a reality.

Ornamo’s sustainability expert Tarja-Kaarina Laamanen made an important contribution to the strategy work, bringing a strong sustainability framework to the strategy work. The Advisory Board, which guided Ornamo’s sustainability work in 2024, also commented on the work from a working life perspective. The group included an expert in responsible trade and industry Riikka Joukio, Aalto University’s professor of sustainable fashion Kirsi Niinimäki, FIGBC’s CEO Antti Ruuska and design agency Fyra’s CEO Hanna Neuvo.

The strategy work was carried out in several Ornamo board workshops during 2024. The workshops were facilitated and visualized by Ornamo’s Research and Development Manager Emmi Putkonen.

The update was made so that Ornamo’s strategy would meet the demands of today and the coming years. The previous strategy 2021-2026 placed the multidisciplinary design community and young generations of designers at the core of Ornamo’s operations
